Health Anxiety Counselling

Health anxiety is characterised by excessive worry and preoccupation with having a serious illness, despite having little or no evidence that this may be the case. Treatment will consist of some psychoeducation to gain insight into the condition and may use techniques to reduce constant worry and rumination. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy would be considered quite beneficial in such cases.

Clients will learn to modify their distorted or irrational thoughts and beliefs and change them into more realistic ones. Other techniques such as experiential work, relaxation techniques or mindfulness are also considered beneficial.  In certain cases it may be useful to explore past traumatic experiences and beliefs so that root causes of the client’s health anxiety can be better understood.
